Flowers for Algernon was written by Daniel Keyes over a 14 year period. While he was working as a literature teacher, he was able to teach children with a lower than normal IQ. After working with those children for a while, he developed the idea for a story in which there was a way to help raise the intelligence of the mentally disabled. With the help of some of his students, he was able to write about a realm in which he was no able to enter. Using the experiences and ideas from his students who were born with lower IQs, he compiled them all into a single story: Flowers for Algernon.
